Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica)

The Rubber Tree, scientifically known as Ficus elastica, is a classic and hardy indoor plant cherished for its glossy, dark green leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, it's a member of the fig family (Moraceae) and is well-known for its air-purifying qualities.

This plant ships in a 6 inch nursery pot and soil. The pot comes with many stems for a full pot.

Note that plants pictured are representative of the size, fullness, health and maturity of the plant we will ship.

After unboxing, keep your new plant in bright indirect light for about a week to let it bounce back from the stresses of shipping. Check roots for rot, and water as needed.

Refrain from repotting for at least one month. While we inspect every plant for pest and health before shipping, its best practice to inspect and isolate your new plant for up to a month to limit pest spread. If your plant arrives with any issue, reach out to our team with pictures if possible!

Plant Shipping Disclaimer: Live plants have different sensitivity levels to shipping stress including but not limited to shipping route/facility weather or being boxed up without light or ventilation for days at a time. Yellowing/lose of leaves, root rot, wrinkling of stems, discoloration, and other signs of shipping stress can be expected to some degree. Minor damage as listed above sometimes cannot be mitigated even through the best of practices per each plants unique sensitivities. Minor and Expected stress on live plants shipped by Scorpio Gardens as listed above cannot be considered for refunds. To minimize stress on your plants in transit, consider adding “heated packaging” for packages traveling through regions experiencing 40 degrees or less and upgrading to Express 2nd Day Mail

Growth Pattern: This robust plant features broad, elliptical leaves that can reach impressive sizes, making it a statement piece in any indoor space. Its growth habit is upright and can develop into a small tree over time.

Light Requirements: The Rubber Tree thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, it may grow more slowly. Protect it from direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.

Watering Needs: Water your Rubber Tree moderately, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry between waterings. Be cautious not to overwater, as it's susceptible to root rot. Reduce watering during the dormant winter months.

Soil Type: Plant your Rubber Tree in well-draining potting soil. A mix designed for houseplants with good aeration and moisture retention is ideal.

Temperature and Climate: Maintain a temperature range between 60-75°F (16-24°C) for your Rubber Tree. It appreciates stable indoor conditions and should be shielded from cold drafts.

Fertilization: Feed your Rubber Tree with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage lush growth. Reduce fertilization in the winter.

Pruning and Maintenance: Prune your Rubber Tree as needed to control its size and shape. Regularly remove any dead or yellowing leaves to promote new growth and maintain its attractive appearance.

Pests and Diseases: While generally resilient, Rubber Trees can occasionally encounter pests like spider mites and mealybugs. Inspect your plant regularly and address infestations promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Toxicity: Keep in mind that the Rubber Tree's sap contains latex, which can be irritating to the skin and toxic if ingested. Place it out of reach of curious pets and children.
